Chennai - The Tamil Nadu CPI-M state secretary, P. Shanmugham, has called for the removal of IIT-Madras Director, V. Kamakoti, following his recent remarks promoting the medicinal benefits of cow urine. Shanmugham criticized Kamakoti's statements, claiming they could promote unscientific beliefs and undermine faith in scientific progress.

Speaking to the press, Shanmugham stated, “The actions and statements of Kamakoti make it increasingly difficult to differentiate between an IIT director and an RSS propagandist.” He accused Kamakoti of using his IIT-Madras position to promote what he called "RSS propaganda," which he viewed as threatening Tamil Nadu's democratic environment.

The controversy stems from comments made by Kamakoti during a public address on Pongal Day, where he praised the medicinal value of cow urine. He gave the example of a Hindu sanyasi who allegedly recovered from a high fever after drinking it. Kamakoti claimed, "Cow urine has antibacterial and antifungal properties. For digestive issues, IBS, and other illnesses, it serves as an effective medicine.”

Shanmugham countered these claims by referencing findings from the Indian Veterinary Research Institute, which reportedly indicate that cow urine is harmful to health. He demanded Kamakoti's removal from his position as director and the revocation of his academic degrees, including his doctorate.

CPI state secretary R. Mutharasan echoed Shanmugham's criticism, calling Kamakoti's remarks "irresponsible" and emphasizing the lack of scientific evidence supporting the medicinal properties of cow urine.

Kamakoti's statements have drawn widespread criticism in the state. Congress leader Karti Chidambaram condemned them on social media as "peddling pseudoscience," while DMK spokesperson T.S. Elangovan suggested Kamakoti be reassigned to a medical college, specifically AIIMS.

In contrast, BJP state president K. Annamalai defended Kamakoti, stating that it was "unfortunate" that a respected academic was being criticized for following his religious beliefs. He urged critics to respect the sanctity of institutions and cease protests.
