Chandigarh- Farmers in Punjab continued their protests for a second day on Sunday, demanding immediate government action on paddy procurement, fertiliser availability and stubble management. The protests, organised by the Kisan Mazdoor Sangharsh Committee and Sanyukta Kisan Morcha (non-political), saw farmers blocking roads in several parts of the state, including Sangrur, Moga, Phagwara and Batla.
The farmers' demands come amidst concerns over DAP availability, a crucial fertiliser for wheat cultivation. Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann had raised the issue with Union Minister of Chemicals and Fertilizers, JP Nadda, on Saturday. Mann highlighted that Punjab imports approximately 70% of its DAP, and global disruptions, including the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, have severely impacted its availability. He urged the Centre to prioritize Punjab's supply due to the time-sensitivity of the state's agricultural cycle.
Nadda assured the Punjab delegation that the Centre is committed to ensuring DAP availability and that the Department of Fertilizers has taken steps to prevent delays. He confirmed that arrangements are underway to guarantee DAP supplies for Punjab's farmers.
The protests also saw farmers expressing grievances regarding recent police actions related to stubble burning. The issue has been a point of contention, with Chief Minister Mann recently criticising farmers for resorting to road blockages as part of their protests. This statement drew sharp reactions from the protesting groups, who reiterated their demand for viable solutions for crop residue disposal.
Farmers are expected to maintain indefinite roadblocks until an agreement is reached on pressing issues. The ongoing protests have significantly impacted not only Punjab but also wider discussions on agricultural support and resources across the state.
